Muslim Hero?

This article discusses Alioune B. Niass' efforts in helping to report the New York Times bomb. The key issue that the article raises is the fact that Mr. Niass, a Muslim, received little if any attention in helping to uncover the plot, because of what might be seen as Muslims playing a positive role in abating terrorism rather than partaking in it. What do you think about this story? Should Mr. Niass' efforts have been recognized? Should his identity as a Muslim be highlighted?

  1. This is a very insightful article that brings to light possible reactions that may have come from the President's acknowledgment of Mr. Niass. However, I wonder how the media would have dealt with this 'thank you call', would they report it sarcastically that America now has its own Muslim hero? While the President's acknowledgment of Mr. Niass would do much to heal the wounds of many Muslims and weave a better web between all Americans devoid of faith, this is just another example of how sensitive we are of the Muslim issue. There is no correct way for people to address this issue. If we forget to mention a Muslims accomplishment or if reporters highlight the background of an individual as Muslim, both actions are reacted to in such overtly sensitive manner that no response is ever adequate.
